I Ate 720 Calories Worth of Gum Drops Today and Now I’m Sad

Not worth half your daily calorie intake.

Not worth half your daily calorie intake.

As the title of this entry implies, I went overboard with gum drops today. I didn’t mean for today to go this way. No one means for their day to go this way. I consumed half my daily calories in the form of overly sweetened chemically altered weird-textured gummy things.

My day started off well. I woke up early, packed myself a salad, went on a lunch time walk and was generally feeling motivated to start the week off on a healthy note. I even went to they gym. Then I got a craving for something sweet and remembered I’d bought a bag of gum drops a few days ago. So I happily opened up the bag and started munching away.

I should mention that these weren’t your every day, ordinary gum drops — they kind of looked like gum drops on steroids — but I didn’t think much about it because who would think that gum drops are as bad for you as Big Macs? I spend all day on the phone so between calls I’d have a couple, forget about them for a while, then have a couple more. I probably had about 12 of them. For some inexplicable reason, I decided to look at the calorie content. This was a very bad idea because I discovered that the serving size is THREE — not twelve — and each serving has 180 calories. If you do the math, that’s 720 calories for 12 gum drops.

And I probably only burned two off during my walk! Oh well. Tomorrow is another day. A day free of gum drops.

  1. How could they be 720 calories? Doesn’t seem possible. I ate about 900 calories at Maggie Moo’s today, and I’d say I got a lot more bang for my caloric buck 😦

This post makes me think of Candy Land.

  2. I tend to do this a lot more then I should. I have an awful sweet tooth. Sometimes I skip meals and eat pie! Oh no. :O

  3. Geez, 60 calories is an apple. That thing must be mostly sugar.

  4. Whenever I feel bad about something I ate I think of how much that thing weighs. No way could you gain a ton of weight just from a few gumdrops in your stomach!!

  5. Bah, you Americans and your calorie counting. Calories don’t mean much in terms of health, not without context. Don’t feel so bad. Granted, eating a bag of gum drops isn’t great for you. But hey, deliciously un-nutritious.

  6. I’m still on the this CANNOT be possible train for my own sanity. I thought gummy candy was “healthier” than a candy bar? I thought I could eat fistfuls of jelly bellys with impunity. I do not like this news flash….

  7. I guess you’ll have to take up skipping? 🙂 (and I don’t mean meals)
